Pik Nik

I guess I've been a little neglectful of updating posts here lately. I blame the summer heat, it makes everyone a little forgetful. These people were probably enjoying one of those lazy, hot afternoons as well. I love all of these haircuts, especially the girl in the front with her hairpin to the side.

Mary and Maude

A lovely portrait of 1930s america. I love the girl in the background clapping her hands.

Sepia lake

One of the constant struggles of scanning is wether to use the colour setting or black and white. There are many choices, resolution versus reality and so forth. this is one of the few that is left sepia. It is also one of the frailest, being printed on more than paper thin fiber. So thin in fact, that I was afraid that the scanner would ruin it. Thankfully it did not, and we have this image. I love the old fashion dock and the old kayaks, it makes it so calming.

Cubish

All of these photos lend themselves very well to the square format, especially the last one. The border also helps give them a sense of intrigue and mystery. There is no information on the back, so we must guess where we are. I'm going to assume somewhere in California.

A line of children

In this great square snap, we have a gaggle of children. Why were they in the middle of a field? Was it a field trip, or perhaps their backyard. Also, what is that crds hatching effect all over the print? At first I thought it was a fence, but it looks to be something else, perhaps something during development. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

A man on each arm

Such a great freeze frame of some of the fashion of the era. I just adore the sailor themed outfit the girl is wearing. It must have been pretty muddy out, as they appear to have rain boots on. There is nothing on the other side to tell where in the world we are. Maybe its better to just guess.

It's called fashion

One of the best parts about old photos is seeing the different fashions. You can see how trends of today come from the older generations. Here is a great dress that shows off an era. Made of practical materials, serviceable, yet fashionable, with a  high waist and collar. As well as the dress being tinted, the woman herself is as well. She appears to be standing by some sort of monument, possibly at a museum. Her Beau was probably on the other side of the camera on their day out.

Paradise, Hawaiian Style

I doubt these two ran into Elvis on their trip to the Aloha state, but I'm sure they had some fun. They look as if the three of them had just landed, with their suitcases by their sides. Off to find adventure of their own, we must leave them, for the rest of their trip has vanished into thin air

Off Roadin'

Some people forget just how rugged older cars were. They were built for a country that had very few roads and even fewer repair shops. Everything was made to be fixed with a ball of twine and a hammer. Even though vintage cars is one of my lifelong passions, I can never completely trust myself to id cars made before 1930, so any suggestions would be welcome. Whatever brand forged this one, it seems to be all decked out: it has a sun visor, a fog lamp and off road tyres. This photo was most likely taken in southern Alberta, perhaps near Drumheller.

C'mere you

I love the smiles in this photo. you can see the love in their eyes as they gaze at one another. They look so natural together, arm in arm. I like the use of landscape in this shot, and them being a little off centre helps the photo a great deal.

Framing

I love how this was printed on the wrong paper. Unless this was meant to be like this for people to write on the bottom. There aren't that many photos of people sleeping, which is a shame. Some can be hilarious, but some can be quite unnerving. It makes you think if this is how you look. This one seems very calming.

Scribble

All snapshots live different lives. Some are stuck in books for decades, some are thrown in shoeboxes, and some are stuffed in wallets. These ones were in awful shape, all bent and creaked. On the back someone had used them to see if a ballpoint pen was working. And yet they have withstood the test of time. The scene they captured is what we imagine the past as. Fun outside in the backyard perimetered by a white picket fence, not a care in the world.

Glasses you could fry ants with

These glasses were the reason that the term "Coke bottle lenses" was invented. You can't even see her eyes, but that could just be the camera angle. Im guessing this was shot in a rural area, judging by the PVC pipe and pen in the background. I wonder how old she was. Definitely over 90, but how close to 100? Your guess is as good as mine.

Fresh Fruits!

A lovely photo of a small town crookery store, before huge chains like Sobey's or COOP. Outside with all its fresh bananas and watermelons. The sing says "Wise's Grocery -- 32----" Who knows where it is, but judging from all of the exotic fruits, probably not Canada.

Ananas

The french word for Pineapples, which I found immensely funny in elementary school. These people seem to be peeling (?) a lot of them. A luau, perhaps? Behind the chain link fence there appear to be even more in the ground, so this is probably Hawaii or somewhere apse as tropic. When I first saw this photo, I didn't even notice what the man was doing, I could only look at that woman's glasses. Almost as big as Edna Modes from The Incredibles. They go with her dress. How go-go.

Oh Canada

I just love these small Kodachrome prints. these ones were taken in september 1960. On the sing it says "Canadian royal mounted police". Based on the trees, this was probably taken in Ontario or British Colombia. I still haven't figured out exactly where.

Nouveau

Vernacular photos usually stop being collectible in the 70s. This was around the time that borderless photos came into fashion, which took away a lot from the photo. It became a picture, more than an object. These are from the late 90s, and were found in a frame at a thrift store. I wonder why someone thought that these rather unremarkable photos deserved a place on there wall. who knows.

Up, up and away

Some photos that you find you can figure out instantly. This one is one of them. The only question is why they took the photo. Was it for insurance, or just for proof. Who knows. I love vintage cars, but I can never get  truck names right. I believe this is a late 50's chevy or GMC, but any info would be nice. Thanks!
